Walking Rehabilitation SystemWaseda UniversityWaseda University has proposed a new locomotion rehabilitation system for patients who suffer from paralysis due to strokes. In these patients suffering paralysis on one side, the circuit that the brain uses to acquire information from the leg on the paralyzed side is obstructed. To overcome this problem, the system informs the patient through stimulating the non-paralyzed leg to send information to the brain about the status of the paralyzed legs based on the foot contact pressure information. The objective is to restore lost brain function, regain the correct foot contact information and improve weight balance adjustments while walking through constant repetition of contact information flow. The system is composed of two tactile interfaces. The first detects foot contact pressure on the paralytic side while walking, and based on the contact pressure detected on the paralytic foot, the second interface exhibits foot contact pressure on the non-paralytic leg. The rehabilitation assist RT kit is a tactile-bio feedback system composed of three units: foot contact pressure tangible unit, foot contact pressure sensing unit, and central information processing unit. Conventional foot contact pressure sensing unit could not be used previously for walking rehabilitation that required high speed conversion of foot contact pressure information. However, the newly designed sensing unit, is compatible with every movement including sitting. standing and walking and it can also be attached to different parts of the body.
