Sep 6, 2008 - Catchy tune but the message of the lyrics sucks. This dude is giving out about studying and so recieving educational qualifications. He claims that if one does one will end up working for the rat race. With no educational qualifications you will also end up working for the rat race but for less pay. At least with an education it's often possible to land a semi comfortable office job or professional position. Without an education you will probably end up in some low paid factory job or alike.

Sep 6, 2008 - Chill outI think the song was more about the eliteism of universities at the time

Sep 6, 2008 - no man you dont catch it ... school is brainwash bulshit and you have better to do of your life than be a robot in the system or a rat in race .. ska and freedom yaa !
BlueSkyAtMidnight Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - The record industry is a large old rat race too though. All the marketing and all. I see your point but I still say that the lyrics are way too negative. It's this singer bloke who needs to chill out I reckon.Later the same dude sang with Bananaramma, I mean what the? The Banana's were total commerical money making record company drivel. Terry Hall, not so different to Jerry Hall.

Sep 6, 2008 - hm well but with this song isnt mean u shouldt get anthing of qualifications, i think with this song is the extrem of those "rat race runners" mean and however terry hall be commercial in the future at this time, when this songs came out he didnt must be...

joeyoap Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - It's easy to write leftish political stuff when you're relatively broke, then you sell a few albums and fill you're bank account and it just sounds like hypocritical bullshit.Great tune and a truly great band though.
shaluke Says:
Sep 6, 2008 - so u mean the specilas are so commercial left political shit or not?

Sep 6, 2008 - Mass unemployment at the time, song tapped into despair of the choices, no job or sell your soul. These days it doesn't feel quite the same about losing your soul, but even 10 years ago The Verve stated "your a slave to money then you die". I agree with the sentiment to a degree, but like most in the rat race myself to make sure my kids have choices. But hey they were young and idealistic, thank god.
