CobinRain Says:

Oct 10, 2008 - In the days after the liberation of France, the end of the night terrors and over 4 years of life under fascist occupation. Not to mention the cold and the hunger of a city like Paris with little coal or oil and life on 900 calories a day... Schmaltz is perhaps the wrong word. this is the intensity that those who have lived their lives in affluence and security can hardly guess at. See Charles Trenet La Mer...you think this is about the sea? Same date, same feelings. Not schmaltz

barbcard Says:

Oct 10, 2008 - Please don't jump to conclusions, as if the French were the only ones to suffer in WW2.Schmaltz is actually a very affectionate word. And I see no connection with Trenet's La Mer,unless I'm missing some deep hidden meaning.

CobinRain Says:

Oct 10, 2008 - I think it was the foody image of schmaltz that sounded discordant to me-the contrast of rich food with emotional hunger. And I agree with you about war too, everyone suffered in the war except war profiteers. Like now. This song is about sorrow and joy. Deep, I thought, and realistic. La Mer? To me this is a song about the end of the war. How do you read it? (The French beaches were off limits for almost 5 years)

barbcard Says:

Oct 10, 2008 - So you're suggesting La Mer is a song of longing for the forbidden sea the time? OK, maybe schmalz is inappropriate in the context. I was referring to the violin music; it's also a word shared with my friend 240252 (see below) for a certain type of music we both love. I guess what really bothered me was your generalization that--possibly because I am American--I've lived a life of affluence . Such generalizations are the roots of prejudice. 240252, by the way, is Polish.
