Aug 20, 2008 - I'm curious. Is this kat Jamaican but resides in Toronto, Canada? Or does he just use alot of West Indian slang and swagger in his music because it sounds good? I've alwayz wanted to know that shit.
clawalk Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - He's Canadian born to Jamaican parents. So he's grown up in the lingo and the culture.
gangstarock22 Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - This is how people from T Dot talk. Almost all the black people in Toronto are West Indian so we all have that West Inidan swagger and slang because its part of our culture. Nothing fake about what Kardi is doing. Not like Sean Kingston whose whole caribbean image and accent is fake.Big up Kardinal for repping T Dot properly with this video
phesterjr Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - Hmph. Okay, good lookin' out.
phesterjr Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - I take it that ur from there too because you said, "We have that West Indian swagger". U gon' have to break it down 4 me some more, though. I never really thought Kardi was fake. I figured he either had Jamaican heritage in him or he was running wit a bunch of Jamaican niggaz in his circle, and it had an influence on his style. I myself am guilty of that when it comes to MY music. But my question is....
phesterjr Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - My question iz, "Why Toronto"? I take it that half of the city (T-Dot) iz popualted with alot of Island headz. Why iz that? U alwayz here about places like Florida or New York being that spot where they're at. That might be a deep question, but I was alwayz curious about that also.
DorothyDandridge Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - To get techinical, the Canadian government promoted a West Indian immigration scheme back in the mid 60s to and alot of Jamaican's came particularly to Toronto who had professional skills trade (alot of nurses and entrepreneurs). Then in the 70s another immigration scheme promoted Jamaican domestic servants to come and work in Canada...Since then the wave of immigration from the Caribbean has not stopped and many still coming to reunite with their family.

Aug 20, 2008 - But styll nuff r bein deported!
BlackJays Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - There is also evidence of Jamaicans living in Canada since the 18th century. In Nova Scotia, many Jamaican slaves (known as Maroons) escaped and made their way to the east coast of Canada and America.
BlackJays Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - *Correction: they escpaed from Jamaica, and most of them settled in North America's east coast, espeically Nova Scotia.
DorothyDandridge Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - That's true but I was responding to phesterjr's post asking why so many West Indians live in Toronto. And I am talking about the more recent Jamaican's who've maintained the culture and lingo of the island. My grandmother was one the Jamaican domestics that came to Toronto during the 70s. Most of my family got the opportunity to live in Canada because of this. Those Jamaicans you are talking about that have been here since slavery have most likely lost much of this culture.
BlackJays Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - Yes, I agree that most of those families lost their Jamaican culture.
phesterjr Says:
Aug 20, 2008 - I see you ended up responding to someone else's response kinds regarding my question. I done started a history lesson now, huh? But that was informative. I'm glad u put me on to something new.
