Jul 7, 2008 - Hi, Gerryrains. I don't think he was correcting your German so much as he was indicating that this is not actually the Vienna Philharmonic, but the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera. They are actually two separate orchestras, although many of the players are the same. Players are only admitted into the Vienna Philharmonic after a probationary period of a few years in the opera orchestra.

Jul 7, 2008 - nickfox2,Oh! That was not at all clear to me. Thanks a lot for straightening that out for me!Gerry

gerryrains Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - nickfox2,Gerry again. I just looked up there at his comment and while I probably could have worked it out, I couldn't translate Staatoper easily and basically said the hell with it. Had he, as you, perhaps given the German name followed by the English translation of that name, then I would have known what his message actually meant. The only reason that I could translate Staatskapelle Dresden is that I saw the translation on one of my CDs.

Jul 7, 2008 - Sure, no big deal. Understood. It's funny how so often on the internet, without the benefit of one-on-one communication, one's meaning can be misunderstood! Now you know, Vienna Philharmonic in German is "Wiener Philharmoniker" and Vienna State Opera Orchestra is "Orchester der Wiener Staatsoper."

gerryrains Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Yes, thanks!

Jul 7, 2008 - This is the most efficient performance of this piece I've ever seen. When I hear other conductors perform this, it sounds frenetic and muddled in a manic sort of way.

twinviolinista Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - I am in complete agreement. Genius. Kleiber and his orchestra give the best performance I've ever heard. It's clean, controlled, and full of energy.

etucker82 Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - There probably won't ever be another conductor as gifted as Kleiber. Think of all the performances we missed by his not conducting more. Pure tragedy.

pellekopp Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - the one thing to really know about conducting is that the conductor decides how the musicians should play, and rehearses.. what he does when actually performing is a very little part of the conductor's job.. and if you like the result, then he did a good job..

disturbed6015 Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Kleiber. :)It's right at the top. ;)
