They are actually two separate orchestras, although many of the players are the same. Players are only admitted into the Vienna Philharmonic after a probationary period of a few years in the opera orchestra.

Had he, as you, perhaps given the German name followed by the English translation of that name, then I would have known what his message actually meant. The only reason that I could translate Staatskapelle Dresden is that I saw the translation on one of my CDs.

Now you know, Vienna Philharmonic in German is "Wiener Philharmoniker" and Vienna State Opera Orchestra is "Orchester der Wiener Staatsoper."
