Jul 7, 2008 - Of course it matters what it's about- I mean, if something is written for a particular purpose then its meaning matters.

Jul 7, 2008 - CRSarah4, I'm sorry, but that information is invalid...Requiems are not about people going to hell-I mean of course, sometimes that may be mentioned- but thats not the true meaning of the Requiem mass. You need to do some more research.

Jul 7, 2008 - Sorry for you,Thomas, but you're wrong.Mozart didn't believe in God,like many artists, writers and philosophers livin'in the Century of the Lights Europe...He was'nt an American evangelist! It ain't necessary to believe in any god to create great piece of liturgic music, it needs "only" genius and_mainly_profession, and Mozart did have the both,'cause he LEARNED music, and not wasted his time with the "holy" bible...

Jul 7, 2008 - Mr. Ouiark.I´d like to know in which of my statements do you find wrong:1. Mozart´s understanding of the text was outstanding.2. The Latin text is extraordinary and is a Catholic text.3. This work of art is one of the summits of Occidental culture, and it expresses the Catholic view of God, the world and man.4. I didn´t state anything about Mozart´s faith. Although it´s not hard to see that the commitment this music shows with the text doesn´t seem a simply theoretical one.

Jul 7, 2008 - fantástico tu comentario, that part: not wasted his time with the holy bible; se lleva las palmas, genial

canneddice Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - There is no reason to look down on people's religion. Mozart was most likely an unbeliever. He did have genius and probably did not write in the name of God. To say that he did not 'waste time with the Holy bible' is to look down on the religion of many. Bach did, as you say, 'wasted time with the Holy bible' and wrote beautiful music. One with genius does not necessarily have God, but Bach had both. He is as famous as Mozart. Did he waste his time? One can have profession, genius, AND God.

ouairk Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - I do agree with you.I known how much pious was Bach...But I here have to admit my preference for his profane pieces _actually the period of Cöthen which lives the publication of "Das Wohltemperierte Klavier"(1st),that some consider as "the Ancient Testament of occidental music",Beethoven's Diabelli Variations being "the new",what shows that I'm not without contradiction!

ouairk Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - Anyway, beginning of all stuff came by church music_almost Magister Leonin & Perotinus Magnus_and even if I'm atheist,I pray for latin liturgy return of Christian Mass just to hear"La Messe Nostre-Dame"(Machault)in a Cathedral.Sorry for my bad English! It's not my mother language..

eddiemperor Says:

Jul 7, 2008 - The greatest music by the greatest man. Full of sorrow and lament. Each movement representing torment and death. Even tough it was played for Papa Haydn, this should have been played at Mozart's funeral, Every man who's pure in the soul deserves such music as Mozart's Requiem.
