Tribute to Chilean Political Singer and activist Victor Jara, murdered by dictator Pinochets troops on 15th September 1973. This followed the military coup on 9/11 1973 which overthrew the democratically elected government led by Salvator Allende. Allende was found dead in La Moneda (Presedential Palace) beside an AK47 given to him by Fidel Castro, allegedly after commiting suicide. Victor Jara, after singing a political song to other prisoners in the National Stadium, has his fingers and ribs smashed by Pinochets troops. Sung by Christy Moore.

Long live Victor Jara He lives in our hearts and minds.

Aug 20, 2008 - It's a great shame he had to go. But i think he left to send us a message to never stop fighting imperialism and facsism i love the translation of his last poem it brings tears in my eyes when he says"What horror the face of fascism creates! They carry out their plans with knife-like precision. Nothing matters to them. To them, blood equals medals, slaughter is an act of heroism"

Aug 20, 2008 - Whoah! Nice work mate. That moved me to tears. I met Joan Jara - a wonderful woman - a couple of years ago and she talked about Victor's 'gentle kind of strength'. More recently, I had the pleasure to meet Carmen Castillo, Miguel Enriquez's partner, and she said much the same thing about Miguel. The same could be said about El Che, about Partrice Lumumba, Dr King, Olaf Palme, Petra Kelly and, of course, Salvadore Allende. It's hard to pin down what that quality is but it's there alright.

Aug 20, 2008 - Im not a Pinochet fan, but i gotta say that the destruction of Victor Jara's hands is a commie myth. Recent studies and the lawyer defender of Victor Jara family today, just admitted some days ago that his hands were never taken off as the say. Nothing happened to his fingers. Though he was killed by more than one bullet, belive me that. Anyway, the song is beautiful. Greetings from Santiago, Chile.

clinthotvedt Says:

Aug 20, 2008 - Maybe. Sometimes (And when it comes down to fighting violent fascists, usually) it's better to fight fire with fire. A group which is brutally oppressing you isn't going to listen to your well-rounded arguments why they should stop doing that, in which case it's better to pop some rounds to protect yourself and the ones you love.

jellyterrorist Says:

jokerswildnyc Says:

Aug 20, 2008 - I believe the CIA had a hand in the coup, but the real blame must be placed on Allende who allowed the generals into his cabinet. The cordones were ready to take control of the state, but were prevented from doing so by Allende and a left that supported him/the UP. Real worker's power comes from below, not from above. Allende made the military powerful by using them to "restore order."
