Oct 6, 2008 - This video is excellent! I am playing a piece that requires a lot of thumb position and this really helps! Thank you!

Oct 6, 2008 - very helpful lesson thankyou! I have a question. in uper postions (like 6th and 7th) do you use your pinky at all? haha, because I find it very very very difficult. lol, thankyou.

Oct 6, 2008 - Very awesome. I liked it alot that you showed me what not to do because i do that all the time and my private teacher doesn't get on to me about that, the one where you dont keep your fingers curved. Quick question as well, so you keep your thumb over both strings i mean i knew the basics of the postition before, but i never knew you kept it on both strings. Thanks for the lesson!

Oct 6, 2008 - Outstanding - thank you SOOOOO much for these lessons!!! As a beginning adult cello student I was extremely excited to find them - many, many thanks to you for your generosity.

Oct 6, 2008 - How does one go quickly from fourth position into thumb position? It seems to me like you would have to be able to almost flip your thumb from behind the neck into thumb position.

sweetviolet1000 Says:

Oct 6, 2008 - Thank you so much for your video lessons! I am playing violin and a bit of viola, and now I have just acquired an old cello and I am trying to learn to play it by myself. I look forward to more!

Oct 6, 2008 - you'll need a teacher believe me

Oct 6, 2008 - EXTREMELY informative! THANK YOU!! Aside from 5th-grade strings and gleaning basic tips from fellow students in my junior high school orchestra, I've never received formal cello lessons. After a 20-year hiatus I started playing again and have now been playing regularly at church for about 6 years. But because I'm somewhat "self-taught" I've avoided high notes b/c the thumb position has always seemed intimidating. Thanks to this video I hope to soon conquer my fears and open up my range.

Oct 6, 2008 - hi man iam an egyptian cello player i love ur thumb realy ur lessones make me feel better but i want ur new

Crodic Says:

Oct 6, 2008 - Well, it's almost something like that. I myself, when switching into thumb, tend to play #F and G with the first and second fingers instead of third and fourth. I'm not quite sure if that's ''technically correct'', but there are many methods to carry out switching.

anchoalyptica Says:

Oct 6, 2008 - this is very helpful, thanks! :) Since my ex-teacher hadn't teach me how to play properly the thumb position, now I got used to play in a bad way, but this video helps me learn it well. I'm still having a few problems with my 1st finger, because it bends and I can't play at all with the nail, but hopefully with more practise I'll get the right position :)

YouDiscuss Says:

Oct 6, 2008 - MadamCadaver, you don't usually use your fourth finger in the upper neck positions, because, like you said, it's more trouble than it's worth. You would generally shift up to get those notes that are out of position.

YouDiscuss Says:

Oct 6, 2008 - This video was incredibly helpful with thumb position! I hadn't realized that I'd been doing it wrong all this time. No wonder thumb position was so weird for me. I'm double-jointed, so my third finger would get into this weird, arthritic claw-like position where the knuckle would straighten and my top knuckle would bend. It was painful to get out of and made the neck positions very uncomfortable! Thanks for the vid. Also, your cello has a great sound - what kind is it?

amandalegend Says:

Oct 6, 2008 - Oh ok, Thank you =]

Oct 6, 2008 - this guy has been a big help while i try to teach myself cello, but the whole time the back of my mind keeps churning away hoping for him to slip and say "mmm drugs are bad, mkay..."

Haselnusskern Says:

Oct 6, 2008 - Thank you a lot for this extraordinary helpful lesson! Was important for me to see that you have to overextend your thumb for thumb position. Now I'm still not sure if my index finger is in the correct position. Do I the right way if I press the string down with the border of my index fingernail?Greetings from Salzburg/Austria (where Mozart was born ;-))Johannes

MaskguyEvan Says:

Oct 6, 2008 - LOL!

Mymothercanrun Says:

Oct 6, 2008 - Could you have a lesson how to get a better tone as you head up on the string?

wufufufu Says:

Oct 6, 2008 - DO U USE PINKY?

carmelmnms Says:

Oct 6, 2008 - Thanks for the great lesson. Could you talk about reading and playing the tenor clef?
