WOW! This is a pretty cool video of a 777 & 747 SP landing in a cross winds down in Brazil. This little item shows the Boeing factory determining the demonstrated crosswind landing limits on the 777 and the 747SP. The engineers make educated guesses, but then the test crews have to go actually prove the numbers. They sneak off to Brazil to do these tests at a certain remote BAF airbase famous for its continual atrocious crosswinds...Should the gear sideloads be excessive and fold one up, there is nobody there to take nasty pix for the Airbus guys to wave around in the press. This is some good piloting in getting these planes down. It comes close to "incredible".... tire change anybody???? If you haven't seen these it's pretty amazing to watch planes of this size crab walking in on a landing. I can hear the whole crew and the pilot just yelling "Yeehaaaa" at the top of their lungs.Note the rudder action on landing. PS: I suspect that the pilot and co pilot are wearing Depends.

Jul 7, 2008 - The location of the airstrip is Moses Lake, Washington state. Boeing has an airfield there where they do a lot of flight testing.

Jul 7, 2008 - The airstrip isn't located in Brazil, it's Moses Lake, Washington State. Boeing has a flight testing facility there.

Jul 7, 2008 - yeah that airstrip IS in Brazil because it is one of the few airstips that have such a high crosswind velocity
albareis Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Ok, let´s make things clear: the video compilation was made in Brazil, by someone who works at "Aeroclube de Bragança Paulista", an aviation school located in Brazil. The messeges that appear between the scenes are in portuguese. But the scenes themselves WERE NOT TAKEN IN BRAZIL, BECAUSE HERE IN BRAZIL WE DON´T HAVE A DESERT PLACE WITH A RUNWAY LIKE THAT. Who says it´s in Brazil is saying bullshit. Period.

Jul 7, 2008 - Those tests were in Iceland. It's where planes go to get qualified for crosswind landings because of the high winds.

Jul 7, 2008 - For all of you saying you think you know where it is, I used to be a commanding test pilot for Boeing when the first 777 was released. I can inform you that the scenes here have been filmed in ICELAND.
IScreamer Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Iceland it is me old matey! I spent 5 years, culminating as senior data engineer with Boeing on such tests, the vast majority of which do, in fact take place in Iceland. And I recognise this unequivically as being in Iceland.

Jul 7, 2008 - Is this automated or does the pilot instigate this! I thought it was strange that the landing gear leaned into the landing (which would make sense to reduce the shear forces) but then appears to return to upright at the last minute??? Any info. would be great... Is fascinating to see.
gylanunderhill Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - its to do with the ruder peddels as you fly they control as the landing gear is out it controls that as well it is how the pilot controls the air craft on the ground.hope this helps

Jul 7, 2008 - awesome dude
benthebest1993 Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - the landing gear start leaning back slightly to brace for impact but then level off slightly as the pilot flares and yes this is all in controle of the pilot no auto pilot

Jul 7, 2008 - This is a really good video, and judging from the footage of the 747, its has to fairly old, but great video, you have to be a really skilled pilot to do that
