Indonesia since Suharto Soeharto Soharto SuehartoIndonesia editor in Thailand - - Endy Bayuni, Chief Editor of The Jakarta Post, speaks on "Democracy in Indonesia since Soeharto Stepped Down."Across South and South-east Asia, the story of democracy continues to be a struggle on many fronts, sometimes pitting large sections of the public who yearn for it against members of the ruling elite who treat with contempt the political will of the people. Each narrative unfolding in a country's attempt to restore democracy or to save it from abuse is different from that of its neighbour. Those of us who have been living in Thailand since the country's 18th military coup, in September 2006, were witness to one such clash of ideas and wills. To broaden this understanding of Asian countries in transition towards democracy, the FCCT has the pleasure of hosting a panel discussion featuring respected editors of newspapers from three countries: Pakistan, Nepal and Indonesia. Such relevance has been generated by the recent assassination of former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto, exposing the multiple tensions that plague that country, which has been under the grip of a military dictatorship for nearly a decade. In neighbouring Nepal, on the other hand, the dominant story is the push by the country's powerful political parties to abolish the 240-year-old monarchy, an act that has drawn interest in some of the other kingdoms across the region. Indonesia, by contrast, has generated interest for its mixed record towards democracy a decade after the Suharto regime was turfed out by mass pro-democracy protests.Indonesia since Suharto Soeharto Soharto Sueharto was made just days before this historical leader died a death of multiple organ failure

Oct 12, 2008 - Suharto was a good president. He did self credit himself as Father of Development...(Bapak Pembangunan), but really ,Indonesia did grew under his rule. GDP grew from 100+ million in the 70s to 860+ in the 90s. It's unfortunate that his rule also involves a lot of corruption and money laundering among his family and close associates. I really think Indonesia has a lot of potential...if only its leaders realize the kind of damage their corruption is doing towards the country's economy.
