Oct 11, 2008 - I've heard this one has the story straight lifted from a western from the 1959. Rio Bravo?? Quentin Tarantino likes Rio Brave a lot. I haven't seen it.

Oct 11, 2008 - carpenter said it was influenced by night of the living dead.

Oct 11, 2008 - (@WASPTexas)I've just bought a German DVD, where they say that Carpenter took scenes from Rio Bravo and also some names. So, yes Rio Bravo inspired this great motion picture. ;)

Oct 11, 2008 - I love the Carpenter scores. They all have a spooky, end of the world vibe to them. They are desolate and fearsome. Old synth tones have a very eerie inhuman quality to them and John Carpenter uses them perfectly. All his films are unnerving in ways that defy explanation. There is a simplicity to his compositions and visual style. He can give any setting a frightening vibe just by the way he moves the camera and people in the frame.

Oct 11, 2008 - Thanks Fatbastid for bringing back some great memories...This movie was broadcast quite a few times by Italian TV in the 80s...I myself saw it for the first time in the early eighties, when I was 9 years old, and it definitely had an impact...was curious to see what a Los Angeles ghetto looked like, but when I finally made it there I was wise enough to stick with the tourist sites, And, yes, the soundrack kicks ass!

Oct 11, 2008 - Indeed, in fact Carpenter also edited the film but used the credit of "John T. Chance" which was the name of John Wayne's character in Rio Bravo. Carpenter essentially borrows the last third of the film as inspiration, so don't expect a literal copy, as I did [I saw Assault first, then Rio]. Rio Bravo is a great Western, Carpenter's Assault is a great flick and the remake of Assault while overblown was a passable flick I thought, but I still prefer Carpenter's.

Oct 11, 2008 - i just saw rio bravo. the premise is the same but carpenter jumps right into the action. much more character development in rio. as usual, the carpenter version is worth it just for the music.
Rbatty2 Says:
Oct 11, 2008 - Yeah. Of course Carpenter didn't have the budget Hawks had so he had to simplify. Its just a mistake I think to say Carpenter's film is a remake. They both have an odd assortment of characters who have to work together to survive. I think they both work on their own terms. Carpenter was also inspired by his childhood: he grew up in a log cabin in Kentucky, his parents were liberal artists and they did not fit it with the Bible belt locals. So Carpenter was inspired by that feeling of isolation.
