Oct 13, 2008 - I agree! Someone can tell me where is Okka from? Is he bulgarian ?

Oct 13, 2008 - Okka is gipsy. From Bulgaria.

Ross1041 Says:

Oct 13, 2008 - Thank you a lot for this answer! I thought Okka was turkish (or, anyway, not bulgarian), because of the particular sound of this piece (and others by him that I saw on you tube) that I found quite different from other music played by Papazov. Sorry for my ignorance: I'm italian and it's just few weeks that I'm discovering fantastic bulgarian music (approach has been Papazov -- wonderful!! - and T. Spasov).

Oct 13, 2008 - I've seen on you tube a clip (Nevestinsko oro, posted by Makedonier) about Čalgija macedonian music: it sounds to me very similar to this music & I read about diffusion--in Bulgaria--of chalgadjii bands playing in weddings and chalgadzhia as a virtuosistic-improvisation genre: origins of both terms probably from turkish chalga or çalgı. I wonder if it's appropriate to correlate music here by Papasov-Okka to all this stuff. Thanks if someone likes to explain about this, or indicate references

Oct 13, 2008 - I think they play fantastic mix of Turkish Rom music and Bulgarian folk music occasionaly borrowing elements from other styles.

BillRayDrums Says:

Oct 13, 2008 - I am very thankful for musicians such as these. Especially Ivo Papasov! I hope I am able to see him perform live someday.

Ross1041 Says:

Oct 13, 2008 - Yes, I think you're saying right: beyond any kind of name or definition, this is a music of many roots. South Balkan history is very complicated (and still very difficult for people, I fear) but a source of incredible richness for music!
