MiG can lock the target just looking by the helmet visor, can fire backwards, has IR sensor that can lock and track the oponent (without letting it know and reducing radar cross section) and the R-73 missile is the best (much better than a Sidewinder)...that's why West German MiG-29 destroyed (in training) every F-16 or F-18

The flare is a kind of counter masure that direct the missle away from the plane, for what i know in real life if a F-16 is been lock there would be a sound in the cockpit that sound like "Counter, Counter, Counter" and the Master caution signal would light up so the pilot would have to act fast if not he would be on the ground...
