Jul 7, 2008 - if van halen had the potential to follow bach along the path he took, he didn't anyway. instead he stopped with all his enthusiasm exhausted about 1 metre down that road. do you have any idea what bach did? van halen's music suffers much more from impermenence than bach's, as the study of bach the great musical example is still widespread after all this time. Van Halen's music has every right to exist, but it is not built to be compared to bach's music
cheroldt Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Come on , dude. Wouldn't you rather be hearin' Diamond Dave and Eddie shreddin' through 'The Atomic Punk', or do you want to listen to these two nerds ramble on about this elevator music?
munkybrain Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - you miss my point entirely. my point was that van halen's music is good in it's own right, but Bach and Van Halen cannot be compared due to the emotional, technical, musical superiority of Bach's music. van halen has a place and a right to be just as much as bach does, but bach cannot be dismissed on account of van halen. you're obviously a very dismissive person tho if you label two people who you know nothing about 'nerds'. you like to label things.
munkybrain Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - oh and as for Glenn Gould, i think alot of people don't realise that there have been people on this planet who have been that talented. as well equipped for his ocupation as einstein or spinoza
pronins Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Elevator music?! Nerds?! Motherfucker, you have no idea what you're talking about, obviously. Because of people like yourself our culture is going downslope, and our children are listening to rap and other trashy genres of music encouraging violent behavior, drug abuse, etc. So fuck yourself, and don't ever comment again, please!
cheroldt Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Whoa ,dude. You need to chill. All that elevator music has aggravated you. I could send you some Van Halen tickets. They're back on tour with Diamond Dave! It would rock out more than this GlenGold guy. I bet this Gold doesn't even tour.
pronins Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - First of all, it's Gould, not Gold. Gould died in 1982 and is considered one of the greatest musicians in history. He toured worldwide during his lifetime, and after the age of 32 or so decided to dedicate the rest of his musical life to recording. You are way too ignorant to argue about this, and talking to you is a waste of my time. Besides, you're not worthy of Gould's artistic ingenuity anyway. I guess some people will always remain mediocrities. In conclusion, you are a retard. :)
cheroldt Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Rock on, pronins.
juliano66 Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Gould was as an astute examiner of music as he was as talented a performer. His combination of both abilities is fugue in and of itself.
RequiemAnima Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - A) this guy wants to provoke; B) this guy is incredibly stupid or suffers from a severe mental illness; C) this guy is an ignorant 12 year old kid... anyway, it's not worth it
jackeddemon Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - i know right?
Derrifin Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - pity you don't understand this great things...hope you will

Jul 7, 2008 - You make me sick, all that's needed.
operaboy1924 Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - well said, very well said.
cheroldt Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - If you're feelin' sick, try jammin' some Van Halen. It works, dude. Trust me.
munkybrain Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - i think i probably speak for everyone here, cheroldt when i say that we just want you to appreciate a great thing, even if you don't understand it or if you don't want to listen to it
cheroldt Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - I actually play piano, and love Bach. I was just yanking chains. Peace out.

Jul 7, 2008 - 'Technicolor trappings of tonality' - this alone sums up my view of this delusional man.
Jazzper79 Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - I think Gould was an amazing pianist. I also think it takes a lot of knowledge in music to really see how brilliant it is. I do not think a lot of people on youtube has studied Bachs music.Jesper 28/Denmark
diftorhehsmusma Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Speaking of how he loved gray and abhorred bright colors (particularly the primary colors), Gould once said that he comforts himself with the thought that behind every silver lining is a cloud :).I find it mildly ironic that the word "chromatic" comes from the latin "chroma-" (color), yet in this fugue (and many others IMO) the chromaticism takes on a very gray quality.
diftorhehsmusma Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Yeah, WTC c# minor is a masterpiece of technical achievement in fugue writing, but I think it lacks some of the utterly sublime harmonic qualities that contrapunctus 14 has.
diftorhehsmusma Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Post-mortem diagnosis is tricky business, and IMO the recent genius-diagnosis movement among mental health advocates is well-intentioned but misplaced. It only serves to reinforce the us/them self/other mentality that many people have about mental illness, albeit perhaps in a somewhat more positive direction.
diftorhehsmusma Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - So You Want to Write a Fugue is *hilarious* and wonderful. Look for the parallel fifths after the "just ignore the rules and try" lines, and the quodlibet of Bach melodies after "John Sebastian must have been a very personable guy."
Imonlysleeping9 Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - Van Halen is boring.
cheroldt Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - These fugues are no match for 'Runnin with the Devil'!
