Sep 7, 2008 - Let me tell you something": I used to live many years in Pto. Rico, a Spanish speaking country, and I met many Americans there living for years and never learned Spanish, just a few words. Many people there don't speak English, many don't even understand it. Kids learn in school just the basics. In Miami everybody speaks Spanish in every public place, the same in Tampa Fla. So why the paranoia?
nancysmum Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - Puerto Rico is not a country it is a *territory* of the United States and the official languages there are Spanish AND English. Segura k viviste en Puerto Rico por que me imagino k todos alla saben que es un teritorio y no un pais, carajo!

Sep 7, 2008 - I don't care how many languages u learn as long as u attempt 2 learn the primary language of the country u choose 2 live n. Speak 15 different languages. Go 2 Germany speak German, France speak French. We speak English as r primary language & if we choose 2 learn a 2nd language, which many of us have, it should b r choice. But we cannot possibly learn the language of every nationality coming here. Perhaps soon the Hispanics who r crying about having 2 learn English will have 2 learn Chinese.
loopieyak Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - Those of u who do not understand the relevance of this issue r not informed. R country is currently hindered n education, law enforcement, legal systems, medical personnel & emergencies services ie fire, EMT, etc. by an inability 2 communicate. N rural areas some cases r dismissed b/c translators can't b found. Criminals freed b/c of lang. barriers. Lost kids unable 2 b found b/c of lang. barriers. Yearly it costs us millions to accommodate other languages. It is a problem, along w/ many others.

Sep 7, 2008 - Try NYC. I went there a while back and perfect English was rare in a land where English should always be spoken.
rickpaul3 Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - Catchy and fun tune...but by rights, shouldn't we all be speaking Miwok, Cherokee, or one of the many other Native American languages that was spoken here before we came?
CollisionOfYourKiss2 Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - Let me tell you something. First of all, Puerto Rico is a province of the U.S. therefore, the people there should be learning to speak English. When they come to Florida and go to school, they learn English. I grew up in Miami and don't speak a word of Spanish and I went to public places. I think paranoia is a little overboard when discussing this topic. We are a country of immigrants who all but Spanish speaking have had to learn English to do business. That's not paranoia it's PATRIOTIC.
coral358 Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - But it is not a state is a commonwealth of the US. People just don't want to speak English. And if you live in Miami you must know that everybody speaks Spanish, many people doesn't even speak English and they work, you just don't want to admit it, I got family there and I visit often. CNN did a report on that, people in Miami that doesn't speak English.
coral358 Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - Collision: yes I speak English, I am bilingual, but I get more pay here in the US just because I speak Spanish. My kids are bilingual they have to speak to me in Spanish, so they don't forget their roots. And I still think many people here are Paranoic with this issue. Period

Sep 7, 2008 - I'm CANADIAN... you can both stay where you are, until you learn to speak AND type.. PROPER English!
nancysmum Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - that's how it is in my neighborhood too. but the kids learn English in school & they are American. Almost all immigrants assimilate by the 2nd generation, it just takes time.
coral358 Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - And a bilingual salesman can get more sales if he can target Hispanic market.
GoodMisterJohn Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - It saddens me to say that Americans can sometimes be very ignorant. Most countries have signs posted in the local dialect AND in English, particularly in Spain and Mexico. How hard is it to post a sign in two languages? Most of you people that are bitching about this issue have never attempted to learn a second language.I agree that the citizens of this country should learn to speak English. That does not mean that when someone comes to our country that they can magically start speaking English.
Retiree96 Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - If they don't speak English in Miami, it is time they started.. this is an English speaking country... And as such shouldn't have to learn a second language.. whoever comes to our country should have to learn English or go home.. I can assure you that if we go to Mexico they won't learn English or post English directions so that we don't get lost.. We do it their way or go home..We have always been a country that went beyond to make people feel welcome.. but this is too much..
kenjelvis Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - but aren't you happy that English is spoken worldwide and is a language which is even promoted by itself and everybody wants to speak it?. Why are you so worried?. If you don't want to speak it,noone forces you because one thing is that the goverment encourages you to learn it and other thing is that you choose learning it.However the opposite is true: You want them to speak in English. If there are jobs where English is neccesary, don't hire people who don't know it. Plain simple. Right?

Sep 7, 2008 - The problem with the United States is it doesn't have an OFFICIAL language, we, however in England do which is obviously English, so immigrants from South Asia and others HAVE to learn English, now we just have sort out these fucking Polish immigrants that are here...
amrutzick Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - no wonder the rest of the world hates us. When we travel abroad we expect everyone to speak english and get upset if they don't. It is not a universal language. However, when you travel abroad many Europeans speak 3 or more languages. We are the ones who are ignorant.
cher182 Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - I'm sure many of us have tried to learn a new language before. In fact, I'm pretty sure it is a standard in our public school systems to take a minimum of one year of a foreign language. This is also why children who DO GO to school can learn English as a second language.I find it disrespectful to not even attempt to learn the language of the country you are visiting and/or moving to. It's called acculturation. Every one of our ancestors did it, why is it so hard now in the 21st century?

CollisionOfYourKiss2 Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - Okay. I've seen a ton of comments saying this is racist and stuff. It's really not. All they are trying to say is, our ancestors had to learn Engish when they moved to America. So wy shouldn't everyone else, who is moving here now, learn the language? Wheteher or not they teach it in other countries is irrelevant. When my great grandparents came to America, from Italy and Poland, they had to learn English to get by in life. Why shouldn't everyone else?
coral358 Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - yes i agree with you.
