Legenary news anchor Charlie Gaddy bids farewell to his audience in this moving edition of the Six O'Clock News. Humble and gracious to the last moment, Gaddy's stirring farewell speech at the end of the newscast is both classy and heart-felt. It reminds us all of why Gaddy was one of the most beloved local anchors in the entire country. (Originally aired 6pm July 1, 1994 -- WRAL, Raleigh)

Oct 10, 2008 - Will Charlie Gaddy Become The CBS Evening News Anchor when Katie Couric Leaves?
rayssonation Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - Charlie Gaddy is a legend here in the Triangle, who has held the news anchor position at WRAL for more than 30 years ending in 1994. Out of all the news people that had been there only two remained...Greg Fishel, who has been the weatherman since 1981, and Tom Suiter, who has been the sports director at TV-5 for since 1969. Imagine Football Friday without Tom Suiter at the helm?
randygupton2 Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - Thanks for the comment. As a former news anchor and reporter, it is important to clarify a few things: Charlie held the news anchor position from 1970-1994. Also, Tom isn't the sports director. He's simply the lead Sports Anchor. He's held that spot since 1981.

Oct 10, 2008 - No, he's just gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
bhayes06 Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - I think Gaddy first took the anchor chair in 1974. He started at 'RAL hosting "Good Morning Charlie" in 1970 after many years on WPTF radio as host of "Ask Your Neighbor."
Jnelson09Returns Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - Is he really, or are you just prejudiced?
bigguy6100 Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - I remember this broadcast, when he left. I remember when Channel 5 looked like that, and I remember the old Sky 5 Hughes 500. Mr. Gaddy was an excellent anchor, Channel 5 wasn't the same without him.
north5880 Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - I didn't know what day that Charlie Gaddy left WRAL. They didn't make some bombastic announcement about it back then like this "Breaking News" trend that's so common now. Maybe he decided to walk away quietly. He was a great anchor and I enjoyed watching him for some 15-16 years (I'm from NC).
davidnc76 Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - My grandmother would always have WRAL on during the 80s and 90s. Charlie was like a television father. So much news was reported from his anchor chair... He and Dan Rather will always be my favorite news anchors. RIP Charlie.
veluz330 Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - Both Gaddy and Rather died?
nickgreen07 Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - Tom Suiter had hair!!
veluz330 Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - I think Gaddy is Born in October 1931 along with Dan Rather
popweaverhdtv Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - They did promote his last newscast for about a month before he left on 7/1/1994. They even ran stories during their newscasts looking back at his career at WRAL.
TexasTV Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - NO! There BOTH alive!
veluz330 Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - I Know they're alive but Gaddy Retired and Dan Rather got Fired
huggyface Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - Is it me or does Curtis have a virtual monopoly on commercial broadcasting in the Triangle? Heck he's even trying to infiltrate the Triad, with the recent purchase of WSJS and WMFR..and of course "FM Talk" WZTK is his baby that seems to reach both heavily-populated markets. What's next, he'll get his own satellite in space?
huggyface Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - Don't know about Mr. Roberts' sexuality..but I used to jokingly call Charlie Gaddy "Charlie Gay." But I really liked him on WRAL in the day. Adele the same. At least Tom Suiter's still there, among the originals.
huggyface Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - I like Greg, but actually Bob Debardeladen was the KING of Triangle weather. Also, Bill Reh is cool; he's worked at probably every area station EXCEPT WRAL!
JeffDeWitt Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - It's you, Curtis is big in radio but hardly a monopoly, Capitol Broadcasting owns WRAL (both TV and FM), plus Clear Channel owns a bunch of stations.Greg Fishel has wonderfully bad puns and is no doubt a better meteorologist but Bob Debardeladen was a REAL weatherman.
GBS1043 Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - Does anyone know why Mark Roberts was blown out of WRAL? He must have done something to piss off Goodmon...
huggyface Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - I'm not disputing the veracity of Bob's meteorological credentials; heck I even made a past post on here saying Bob was the MAN. Greg's pretty good too though. But I was just saying before that Curtis just seems to have a lot of stations under his wing. And certainly not just WPTF. Clear Channel is ruining a LOT of formerly good stations; firing local talent and making their properties sound all cookie-cutterish and that's why I don't usually tune to comm. radio nowadays. NPR and the 'Net for me
BartmanMC Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - Pam Saulsby, Greg Fishel, & Tom Suiter are still on WRAL today.
linkmand Says:
Oct 10, 2008 - he wasnt fired from what I was told. he wanted to do other things like his own marketing co. he does alot of commericals for car dealers. and look at how hot Pam was then and still is now. I met her in person tv doesnt do her justice. one fine looking blackwoman
