Jul 20, 2008 - I LOVE the White Stripes version but this version is like a completely different song all together and i love this too!! He's definately made it his own!
iheartjohnlennon Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - he got the lyrics wrong... it's "when i know you're not around," not the other way around.this isn't bad though...
ChicaBonita36 Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - This is one of my favorite covers Chris does. It has more heart than the White Stripes version by far! Sorry Jack!
freakshowv Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - Fucking bad ass.Kind of reminds me of Iron Horse.
krules17 Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - I'm sorry but this guy and his bluegrass band could never hope to live up to The White Stripes. Not to mention the fact that he did get the lyrics wrong in the first verse. And Jack White is a genius. This version. Is weak. If you want to hear a softer version of it just find The White Stripes playing it acoustic. Otherwise, covers hardly ever even live up to the original. And this is definitely the case here. Poor job.
484467 Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - krules17 You do know that Jack White performs bluegrass / folk music as well. You could argue that Jack White could'nt hope to live up to traditional bluegrass or folk standards. I'll bet if you were to ask Jack White himself he would tell you how incredibly talented Chris Thile is. While I think you cannot compare art (I love both versions) I think the bluegrass cover is genius.
asgelb Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - Chris Thile has won more musical awards and recognition in the musical community than Jack White, who I think is very very talented.Chris Thile also brought the band Nickel Creek to its status, which is hugely successful, especially for a Blue Grass band. Although you may enjoy the original much more, this in NO WAY is a POOR JOB.
krules17 Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - Chris Thile has won two IMBA awards and one BBC award. The White Stripes four MTV Music Awards, two Brit Awards (one being Best International Group), and five Grammys. They were nominated for five more Grammys and another MTV Music award. Chris Thile was nominated for two Grammys, but failed to receive one. So tell me again how he's won more awards and recognition? And as for Nickel Creek, they've had one Platinum album and one Gold. The White Stripes have had two go Platinum and one go double
krules17 Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - And The White Stripes do have heavy "Blues" influence in their music. There is a big difference between Blues and Blue Grass. Not once have they been considered to play Blue Grass. And Jack White can play multiple instruments with great skill. He often breaks into a song in a different one. This song for instance is often performed on piano or acoustic guitar. But Jack White is in no way a Blue Grass artist. And this cover does not do the actual song justice. So yes, it is a POOR JOB.
asgelb Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - I'm not denying the White Stripe's genious. I love them. But to say that he's done a "poor job" isn't accurate. Granted, you are entitled to your opinion, with all due respect.
asgelb Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - The White Stripes also have a sound that is able to cross genres easier than straight-on blue grass. Just because one band has a wider fan base doesn't mean that a less popular artist who covers a song has done poorly. Fine, you may not like his version as much, maybe not at all, but I don't agree that its a "poor job". Its actually a fantastic job and done amazingly well as blue grass. Thats all. I'm not here to argue, just to put in my opinion, like you.
484467 Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - I don't want to argue either - I love the White Stripes and I love his outside projects as well. My point is one could say that Jack White's version of "Wayfaring Stranger" (Bluegrass / Folk)doesn't live up to Emmylou Harris's version. (Again I like both versions - I guess I would make a bad music critic)
rdm1142 Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - "And Jack can play multiple instruments with great skill." Have you ever listened to Deceiver? Chris plays all 39 instruments on the album, plus all of the vocals. So what the fuck now?!
codeaires Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - I always thought that the White Stripes translated well into country/bluegrass. I love this cover.
jagratton Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - "Otherwise, covers hardly ever even live up to the original" - Krules17I think it all depends on who is playing the cover...Chris Thile for instance is amazing on the covers I have heard him play. When playing somebody else's music, one can only hope that they are able to do justice to the song. Even if you are playing everything note for note, and singing word for word, you still are not the artist, and their passion for the song will be different. Different artist, different interpretation.
jagratton Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - Deceiver is my favorite Chris Thile album to date. There isn't a song that I don't like on any of his albums though.
whatyoudreamof Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - I would have rather liked this if he had stuck more to the original vocal arrangement...it already sounded somewhat Bluegrassy.
pearljammer13 Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - The White Stripes are one of my favorite bands, and one day I was flipping through the music channels and saw a live version of Chris Thile covering this, and I instantly fell in love with it. He certainly does it justice, and I guarantee Jack White loves this version. I recently purchased one of Nickel Creeks CD's and I'm really impressed with it. Great stuff.
Lilirishrebel5 Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - this entire album is AMAZING!
goshou Says:
Jul 20, 2008 - I have to say, much as I like Nickel Creek, I think the stuff Thile does on "How to Grow a Woman from the Ground" beats their stuff. The musicianship is better: we always knew that Chris Thile was a better musician than the other two, and he's surrounded himself with people who are more his peers musically. It's an incredible album. I also love what Thile is doing to bluegrass; I think he's reviving the whole genre, combining it with jazz and rock and whatever else he wants. Incredible musician.
