Oct 6, 2008 - I agree. It also started in the mid 90's when all of the cassette recorders were made the same way. The time where every company made they're own cassette deck for they're own unit ended in 1989 I believe.

Oct 6, 2008 - The recorders in jamboxes of the 80's were better than the cheaper recorders they make today, because they had better recording electronics and also used electric erase heads instead of magnets. Magnet erase heads create a low background rumble when played on good stereos.

Oct 6, 2008 - EmersonCollie I have that exact same desktop recorder its sitting right on my desktop its made by RCA and im gonna use it to digitize the tons of tapes i got of random recordings plus i can play my ipod through it
EmersonCollie Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - Yeah, I noticed that the new erase heads or magnets. Some even look like a piece of plastic in there.
EmersonCollie Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - That IC Recorder that I have? I didn't know you can use an Ipod with that. I guess you can, it just wont be in stereo sense it's only a recorder.
coondogtheman1234 Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - I think you can record from the line out on the ipod but youll need to turn it down low or use an inline volume control b/c ive done it ive put music on my digi recorder but some recorders play in stereo and record in stereo the more expensive ones do
coondogtheman1234 Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - in regards to playing my ipod thru my cassette recorder that via a cassette adaptor
coondogtheman1234 Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - EmersonCollie do you mean the blue or white erase heads right? ive seen those they just have a magnet stuck in there
EmersonCollie Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - Hmm, I need to try that sometime. It sound pretty neat.
coondogtheman1234 Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - I did it with a type of rig I made using 2 headphone cords and a mini speaker box, I hookes the left and right channel wires to each other and the + of the speaker and the grounds of the cords to the - of the speaker and it worked
EmersonCollie Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - I see what your saying. It's like as if you are using your cassette recorder as in external speaker for your ipod. That's pretty cool. I'll go ahead and do that in my next video with both of my cassette recorders.
EmersonCollie Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - Yeah, that's it. Before, the erase heads was either chrome or black and it looked just like the playback/record head. Same size too. The electric erase head in my Panasonic Boombox is a black one. But it is still an a electric one.
EmersonCollie Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - So your going from stereo to mono to be able to listen to both Left and Right channels from your ipod through your single speaker on your recorder?
coondogtheman1234 Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - Yeah I remember those, the heads have 2 wires on them ,the cassette recorders that didnt work I took apart but that was way back when thats what I loved to do now if i had the same thing back then that I took apart i might even get it working
coondogtheman1234 Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - Yup thats basically how I did it but the recorder doesnt play in stereo and has terrible bass its tinny but crystal clear, If I had a stereo IC recorder then id prob make another rig like the speaker rig but have it play in full stereo
coondogtheman1234 Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - go for it but I had to cut a little bit of the cassette door off so i can run the cord through it but it fits and works pretty good

Oct 6, 2008 - Nice educational vid. AWESOME vid! Your RCA version of mine seems a little better than mine, maybe not. But WOW! That Panasonic Boombox sounded so good. The new recorders were quiet and added LOTS of background noise! (Not mic noise, DC bias noise)

Oct 6, 2008 - I hate how they seem to be trying to phase out the tape by making poor quality recorders. they want us to spend more money on more expensive equipment. same with HDTV
clydesight Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - That Panasonic Boom Box is so cool! RCA and GE usually got their machines from Aiwa or Sanyo, with some design modifications. I have a couple of really crappy GE cassette recorders. I had a really nice microcassette recorder from GE. Unfortunately, I broke it.The modern stuff IS cheap. Why? Cassettes are still a very viable medium. I mean, how do you share a "tape" from a microchip recorder? You'd need a memory card or have to give the machine away! Long live tape!

Oct 6, 2008 - OMG I have that exact same Panasonic turntable boombox! That's only the third one I've ever seen. I need to make a vid of mine playing a record. :)

Oct 6, 2008 - I really don't like the high pitched whining noise in this video, In one of your other videos, you mentioned that the noise is the tape in your camera.
EmersonCollie Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - Oh okay, I'll have to go and check it out. I'll make a video of the inside of the boombox next.
