SumoDave Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - Forgive any technical error. Assume that beaming is intact. Assume the freighter has low-warp capability. Travel at maximum speed using emergency beam out for the crew of the Maru. Time delay magnetization of the Maru's hull and establish warp engine overload, and subsequent matter/ antimatter explosion to destroy Klingon ships as the magnetization of the Maru's hull draws them to the closest battle cruiser. BOOM. Chain reaction Boom Many megatons BOOM

Oct 6, 2008 - That probably would work. And there wouldn't be a need to pull Kirk's move--reprogram the simulation. Still--it was a masterful plan, not to mention original.
rakkav Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - The STAR TREK novel "Kobayashi Maru" makes a wry comment about that. When Scotty took the test, he got furious at a simulator that would "so badly overestimate Klingon firepower" and decided he'd act accordingly.
rakkav Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - The simulator would probably do something even more outrageous to compensate -- see my comment about Scotty's reaction to the test in the ST novel "Kobayashi Maru".
mikecronis Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - I prefer Scotty's method from the book epinonymous.
maniacmorton Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - That makes sense. Why would the simulation make the Klingon ships overpowered in terms of firepower simply to force the captain into the character dilemma.
teamim Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - As Spock might say, "Indeed." I hope you can look up the novel "Kobayashi Maru" -- IMO, really worth reading. The chapter on Scotty's battle with an increasingly outrageous simulator -- even to his pulling a trick on the Klingons that he himself had proved was physically impossible -- is classic.
Kobayashi77Maru Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - woot woot!
pattheman777 Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - In the Kobayashi Maru book, that's what Sulu did.
no1afriking Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - That's why I love Janeway and the crew of Voyager; how many times has she been in this situation and some even more dire? And she kicks ass!
thanks51 Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - Kirk's entrance here was the coolest of any captain's...movie or tv show.
thelleht Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - "why not just beam up the survivors and go to warp?"Because it has a crew of 81 and 300 passengers. To transport 381 people, even if you used all the transporters at very high speed, would take 5 minutes, with 10-15 minutes being a more realistic rate. All the time with the shields down, since that's the only way transporters can work.
thelleht Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - "Why would the simulation make the Klingon ships overpowered in terms of firepower"Probably because of the old saying, train hard, fight easy.By training against the very best your opponents can theoreticaly do, if you ever enter a real war, it'll be easier for you than if you'd trained against a realistc less opponent. It also guards against underestimating your foe

Oct 6, 2008 - 4:41 Exit signs haven't changed much in the future, have they?
Trwkeys Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - I agree. They all kick ass. MY fav char 7 of 9.
NecessaryTruths Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - Like Robert April once said, "No one's ever improved upon a shovel..."Why change something if you can't make it better?
Mintsauce27 Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - WHAT!?! you want it beamed into your head!?!huh? well, do ya?? :)
WilliamBrothers Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - I know what's wrong with this simulation. The Klingons were using the "Squadron Scale" while the Federation ship was using "Fleet Scale."Anyone who plays "Federation Commander" will know what I mean...sadly.
bluerisk Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - Is it allowed to enter the neutral zone in a case of emerceny? There must be a clear answer to that in the treaty between the Romulans and the Federation. One side is committing an act of war.The Federation captian in trying to save the crew (what would be nothing less than an act of war), or the Romulans (if it is allowed to enter the zone). Then the Federation had to give an adequate answer.
bluerisk Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - In my opinion this test is utter nonsense because it deals with a juridical matter. Look how strict they are on this primery directive even it it means to sacrifice the live of thousands of people.
bluerisk Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - Why does the acadamy expect from its officer to violate treaties, to commit acts of war and putting the lives of millions at risk by waging war with such an behaviour. No matter if they deal with Klingons, Romulans or an other power the Federation has signed treaties with.
YungTigreDaKing Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - this is before next generation where the shields are better... plus, its only the second enterprise
Rashaed Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - This is the original Enterprise refitted. It will be destroyed in ST3.
YungTigreDaKing Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - you know what i never undestood about startreck, why is it when the ship is hit the bridge explodes, their not directly attacing the bridge
maniacmorton Says:
Oct 6, 2008 - Simulation or no, a starship's shields should not collapse after two torpedo strikes.
