The London Metropolitan Police broke health and safety laws in the fatal shooting of an innocent Brazilian electrician who was mistaken for a suicide bomber on a subway car, a jury in Britain ruled Thursday.Jean-Charles de Menezes, 27, was shot in the head seven times at Stockwell station on July 22, 2005, two weeks after near-simultaneous explosions during the morning rush hour killed 52 people and four suicide bombers in London, and just a day after a second suicide bombing attempt on the city's subway system.During the trial, prosecutor Clare Montgomery said the 'fundamental failures' of a police surveillance team led to the endangerment of the public and de Menezes's death. The jury said Thursday that the police force put the public at unnecessary risk, but ruled the commander of the surveillance unit, deputy assistant commissioner Cressida Dick, bore 'no personal culpability' in the incident, the BBC reported.

Aug 21, 2008 - There was NO million dollar fine. The police DID NOT break the law as reported by Ms Arsenault. They were found guilty of failures of Health & Safety. Honest held belief of officers, was not even questioned. A sad & terrible tragedy - BUT blame the terrorists and their sick supporters.
wirefire2 Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - Screw blame, having blame won't change the fact that man is dead. No amount of finger pointing will bring him back, its water under the bridge. Its tragic but we can't undue it by assigning blame. What we should be asking what can we do to prevent something like this from happening again.
DiagnosticSuperstar Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - Remember Harry Stanley? The police have learnt nothing and all think their dirty Harry.
marc4859 Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - They committed murder!De Menezes had done nothing wrong. Police lied and smeared the whole operation. POLICE AND SPECIAL BRANCH COMMITTED MURDER!

Aug 21, 2008 - He was just running to get inside the metro (the metro car) which was leaving... He didn´t know there were police guys behind him.
crazysob83 Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - lisna... ofcourse they blame the terrorists because incase you have forgotten, merely weeks before this did the london bombings occur so ofcourse there going to be blaming the terrorists because in the same chase in the same station they apprehended 2 or 3 of the terrorists that were behind the bombings

MetalSanke Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - The cops make a mistake, albeit a sever and tragic one, and suddenly they deserve to be eternally scorned?
zoidberg100 Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - god people when the Two towers went down America invaded a country killing millions of men, women and children. Yes the british went in the war also for some reason. The MET shoot one man and suddenly the british are evil. Certian the shooting was a tradgedy and the people involed has lost their jobs. It was tragic and so was the war
Biffo1262 Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - MetalSanke, the Metropolitan Police WILL NOT accept it was mistake and both the officers involved and senior officers have lied about the victims actions throughout the investigation to try and justify themselves. The lack of professionalism and the subsequent lies are unforgivable. I am a retired UK Fire Officer and have respect for the Police and their job. I would have had more respect had accepted their mistake and apologised to the victims family instead of vilifying their son.

Aug 21, 2008 - he ran from armed police just after a terroist incident in london....what do you expect ffs anyway it wasn't police it was the SAS police shot to injure in the uk
clarisd Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - The problem is they tried to cover it up and over and over this will happen, we don't educate the police, we only imploy the idiots, so they will follow orders. They don't think, they are not trained to think. They are the club of the estb, and it isn't cost effective.
stuart483478 Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - Did those suicide bombers get in trouble for breaching 'health and safety' guidelines?
Lisnagunogue Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - Harry Stanley was indeed a very sad case. The man, for whatever reason, acted towards police in a manner which suggested that he was about to shoot a suspected shotgun (Verified by independant witnesses). As for dirty harry - not even He is required to be shot before returning fire. Suggest you read R -v- Beckford 1969. I know the officers have. God Bless.
Abigmandis Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - Its not exactly sudden. The Stephen Lawrence Report, the deaths in custody statistics ( particularly ethnic minorities), Birmingham six and countless other cases like them indicate that these are not necessarily isolated incidents concerning an individuals judgement.
Abigmandis Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - That must have have been pretty difficult for him since it has been clearly established that he had no idea he was being followed by anyone. Looks like you fell for the lies, sorry police version of events!
Abigmandis Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - I agree entirely. The police are the only people in this country that can kill with impunity, never committing murder....the police however are always "muredered". If we have to accept death as risk when the police are involved then they should be tried for murder when they kill.
AxMxO Says:
Aug 21, 2008 - these liberal lefty apoligists have really milked this incident. i just saw an advert for ANOTHER shitty tv programme they have made about it. Its bad enough the police responsible for the fatal ACCIDENT have to live with it for the rest of their lives without these weirdos constantly going on about it
