Jul 6, 2008 - Yup.[resp. to bumpyjjeans: "Neo-Cons are used to paying for sex/using substances to anesthesize their conscience after ... advocating policies that destroy the survival of working famlies. That the libertarian branch of the Neo-Con Republican Party should want to legalize commercial sex and narcotics is ... not surprising. Invoking the 1st Amndmnt to let "conservative" college ... newspapers fan the flames of bigotry, creating a hostile environment for minorities, is old Neo-Con rhetoric."]
LivingDeadGirl1981 Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - I loved their scene on "The West Wing" where they did the flag burning trick. It doesn't even actually show the flag on fire. It was just so interesting and though I don't necessarily agree with Penn's argument, I think it was a great argument anyway.
lookit87 Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - I think the reason Chomsky approves of the Speech Code Restrictions is because he doesn't fancy the idea that a minority or other "undesirables" are being harassed by people of low character(Mob Mentality). When it comes down to it all opressed peoples were enslaved by an institution that guarantees fredom to certain individuals but not to others.
lookit87 Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - That is probably why it took so long for the civil rights movement to gain success.
lookit87 Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - However limiting people in what they say won't work either. We should assume that in a College there are educated and responsible people but there is the existence of Mobs. I.e. Frats. There were incidents were they attacked social outcasts and who knows maybe minorities.
lookit87 Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - But that's America and no one's rights should be restricted. By imposing consideration you gain only hostility in return.
lookit87 Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - He mentions 'Market Place of Ideas' and I suppose it is true but that doesn't justify racial slurs or insults based on a persons sexual orientation that does not stack up as an idea in my mind. If an idea that is based on analysis offends you then by all means BE offended but if it is simply a remark meant to inflict emotional harm then that's a problem. That even facilitates harassment.
Panadawn Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - If everyone agrees, and noone is aoffended, there is no need for a guarantee of free speech. The only speech that needs defending is that which offends. I have a right to offend you, that is what the protection is for, to have the right to tell people what they don't want to hear.
bimmjim Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - The girl behind the counter at a coffee bar said "What do you want?" I said "I'll have the short dark portugees cleaning woman with small breasts and the big ass and I want her bent over a mop and bucket on a wooden floor." Now you try to guess what she found offensive. It was the word "dark" And I don't understand why. I said to another guy "Good luck" He was offended, and I don't know why. Some people are just too easily offended.
freestuffffff Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - Penn Jillette is a convincing snake oil salesman to those unfamiliar with his crap. He's a "self-made" multimillionaire who doesn't want to pay taxes, so he shills for the right-wing Cato Institute, a corporate propaganda machine funded by the billionaires who pay his various salaries. He reads this script about college pretty concinvingly off the telepprompter. Penn never went to college -- he attended an extended three-month audition for Ringling Bros. Circus nicknamed "clown college."
ConfederateWill Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - Oklahoma has declared its soverenty from the federal government in a 92-3 vote for state independance 2008

mlbro409 Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - amen... people have got to calm the fuck down.
bc9021010011 Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - Yup.[resp. to freestuffffff: "Just as corporations fund the Cato Institute & many other propaganda agents to help carry out their agenda, so too they fund...college..."conservative" newspapers & the whole Neo-Con talking point echo chamber: Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Coulter, etc....for years Fox News chairman Rupert Murdoch sat on the Cato Insititute board of directors. Penn & Teller are millionaires paid by billionaires to shill for Republican economic policies benefiting only the top 2%."]
trophy30144 Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - I will say it againGod's existence is not proven and as long as it's not proven there is no reason to believe his existence...god is man's imagination, that's easily proven.Amen.
MagnesDrachen13 Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - Speech is either free or it isn't. You have the right to have an opinion, but I have yet to see any document that guarantees "freedom from being offended". If you don't like it, don't listen, respond, debate, chastise, whatever, but limiting speech to begin with is wrong.
thestudent09 Says:

Jul 6, 2008 - I'm still amazed that hanging witches in wisconson is Illegal becaus it's offensive to witches... thats kinda stupid.. no it's fucking ridiculous.
rambos2ndcousin Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - What about the small calling from with in yourself? you can keep lying and denying it, but you can't hide from that truth. I'm not a religious person, i don't go to church, but i do along with every other single human on this planet have that something telling me that there's something more to this life than just science. Disprove that.
ArcanaKnight Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - You can't disprove personal feelings, you can only disagree with them. The reason why you can't disprove feelings is because they are completely subjective and can't be quantified, unlike facts. If you make suppositions about other people's feelings, that can be disproven. Your argument is unprovable/disprovable though because you say that any disagreement or evidence to the contrary is due to that person being in denial or lying. It is a ridiculous claim.
sheppb4y Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - The opening comment on UNH's policy is right on the money; it's called "Word Choice" and it is completely full of shit. In the rare instance that someone actually says "word choice to me" I just laugh in their face.
qwer4o Says:
Jul 6, 2008 - God! Chomsky is such a moron!
