Nov 21, 2008 - Stan Getz.. he made music to the world

XXXGRAPENUTSXXX Says:

Nov 21, 2008 - Blow Stan Blow! That's not squeaking... In Jazz they call That Pure Soul Shining through!

terrryc Says:

Nov 21, 2008 - The slight "squeak" that Stan is chirping is the result of the use of a reed that may be just a little too hard, or too green. Be that as it may, he still sounds like "The Sound". He probably could have broken in his reed a little more before this performance, but does it really matter?

ghostofdolphy Says:

Nov 21, 2008 - Yes. It's confirmed that Getz did prefer harder reeds. Being a hard reed player myself on Alto, you do get more of a *chirp* in the attack. Getz said he liked the idea of having to work harder for his sound, which was ironic cause he's known for how effortless he does it.On another note, Bird was another hard reed player, and he had a *chirp* at times. *not those Savoy sessions though* most of that was plain bad reeds.

barboza63 Says:

Nov 21, 2008 - it surely doesn't!

pkassius Says:

Nov 21, 2008 - I don't think it is from using a reed that is to hard it's about his embouchure .

Nov 21, 2008 - I am just reading through you guys comments and its like you guys really get a high off of this jazz stuff, I've been learning to play for the past 3 years. What do you need to know in order to enjoy the music at that level, I am intrigued.

queendragonface Says:

Nov 21, 2008 - the tone quality is smooth as butter

mymegabiz Says:

Nov 21, 2008 - 2Godbdaglori. It's not just about jazz for me. Some music just pulls everything important together, doesn't matter the type of music, it's just about a togetherness with the musicians that create something totally perfect at those few moments and it's unique and will never be done the same again. Look how connected they are for these few minutes. It's a rare piece of perfection in a world out of step. Here's another one watch?v=_-NdCsZ1o8k

mymegabiz Says:

Nov 21, 2008 - Terryc for fuck's sake this is perfection. Why do you know better that Stan Getz?

terrryc Says:

Nov 21, 2008 - Hey mega biz...nobody is perfect. Stan comes close, but he never listened to his own recordings because he was a perfectionist. From several reliable sources (former sidemen), it was generally accepted that, as formidable a player as he was, the only time he achieved perfection was when he was a perfect asshole. Others on this site who had actual dealings with Getz will confirm this. He was in a special Pantheon in this area: Miles, Buddy Rich, and Gerry Mulligan. Don't forget Benny Goodman.

mymegabiz Says:

Nov 21, 2008 - Fair do's terryc. Although perfection is subjective.

MontgomerylandFunk Says:

Nov 21, 2008 - yfyun: If I were you, I'd worry more about whether or not you're a scumbag, and less about Mr. Getz's religious preferences.
