Nov 21, 2008 - It's a right-hand drive car for the UK, where we drive on the left. The driver's remains would have ended up on the passenger side. In the complete version posted elswhere on YouTube, they had the car in the studio afterwards. The driving compartment was literally flattened. The satirical humour about pointless safety clothing was a bit more obvious, too.

Nov 21, 2008 - Who repaired the tracks etc after this test?

danlefou Says:

Nov 21, 2008 - No repairs as such were needed, as the car slid easily along the rails without touching the chairs or sleepers.Extra ballast was piled against the outside edges of the rails to slow the locomotive and car down. The car's wheels, always outside the rails, ploughed through this loose ballast. The engine travelled about 4100 feet after impact. Network Rail occupied the line for just one day, during which the test was staged and filmed, and the excess ballast swept up.

Nov 21, 2008 - The old guy in the Reliant tried to demolish a train at Bucknell on the English/Welsh border.Network Rail's unequal contest between a Class 31 and an Espace was filmed at Hibaldstow crossing in Lincolnshire.

Nov 21, 2008 - LOL They must be irony and sarcasm deficient Americans :-) ... Really pick any Youtube video at random and 70% of the comments will be morons that don't understand what they just watched. My favourite is "ghost car" where they go to all kindas lengths to rationalise the stupid suggestive commentary with what they actually saw.Wonder how far it'd go with a fully loaded freight train.

danlefou Says:

Nov 21, 2008 - In this case it was about 4100 feet. A UK freight train with all vehicles braked would probably pull up in about the same distance from 70 mph.In clips I've seen of similar staged demos in the US, the speeds are lower and the damage to the car correspondingly less. Remember that kinetic energy increases as the square of speed. In films of actual accidents, any train, freight or passenger, moving at 60 mph or more inflicts damage like this on a stationary car hit square on.

reamaun2 Says:
