Not so much just a great gambling movie, but just a great movie. Newman (Fast Eddie Felson) beautifully portrays the highs and lows of a pool hustler desperate to beat the legendary champion, Minnesota Fats. After winning $18,000 he gets cocky - and loses everything in a mammoth game lasting more than 25 hours. One of the central themes which runs through the movie came from the alcoholic woman in Eddies life: that he "needs more than skill to win: he needs character". The black and white cinematography adds to the gritty feel of the film. A classic film not to be missed.http://www.guidetolondoncasinos.comandhttp://guidetoukcasinos.co.uk

Jul 7, 2008 - The Color of Money is a very good film, but not one tenth the movie that The Hustler is. Newman, Scott, Gleason -- awesome.

Jul 7, 2008 - I have no understanding of why Paul Newman has not received the Oscar. None at all. He is a great actor. So many memorable roles. This was a very effective movie. Jackie Gleason was very good in a dramatic role, as in a couple others. Was Piper Laurie in this too, I seem to remember her. Very good. Thanks.

Jul 7, 2008 - Don't forget...Newman did, indeed, win for THE COLOR OF MONEY. They made it up to him. And most people forget that the year before, he was given an honorary Oscar for his body of work.

Jul 7, 2008 - Well, I must say I haven't kept up as seriously with the Oscars in recent years. The Color of Money isn't a new movie though either. I usually watch the results the next day anymore, because it's too long.

Jul 7, 2008 - I just realized something about this scene that proves my theory -- the final match of this movie is between Eddie and Bert, not Fats. Fats is just holding the stick. Note how Eddie walks past Fats and up to Bert at the beginning of the scene, before turning back around to challenge Fats to play pool.

Jul 7, 2008 - Its Bert who's been playing/Hustling Eddie all the time, taking away everything he has.Eddie simply plays the game as a gambler Bert's the real Hustler.

Jul 7, 2008 - An outstanding insight. I don't know why I didn't realize that before. Bravo.

katdaddy10 Says:
Jul 7, 2008 - No, Newman wasn't that great at pool. Mosconi worked with him a lot to prepare for the role. Of course, everyone knows Gleason was an accomplished player before this movie.

Jul 7, 2008 - Films like this are the reason I've boycotted the movies for 2 decades. Corporate formula crap "starring" rappers, wrestlers, pop stars, rejects off of reality TV shows, 2 minute plots mixed with retarded stunts, car chases, martial artists who defeat an army of 3000 machine gun armed troops, naked girls, action figures sold separately, sound track available. Plots? Comic books, rides at Disneyland, sitcom remakes. Fuck you corporate Hollywood-you've destroyed this once brilliant art form.

Jul 7, 2008 - Thank you for the post. I didn't know that Paul Newman's Felson in the Color of Money was a continuation from the Hustler.
